Who can tell me why eating disorders are so bad?

OK. First off, I do not have one. I simply want to know something. You know what I dont get? Is being anorexic any worse then… lets say, smoking? Either way ur harming ur body. So how come ppl w/ anorexia etc. get so much attiontion? All they want 2 do is alter their body. And if they get the attention bcuz ppl feel bad 4 them cuz they r going to ruin their bodies, well thats fine, u can feel bad, but how come u dont care as much for the smokers? Is it really that different? Uh, idk, the world is confusing sometimes.

Answer #1

Most eating disorders pose a more immediate threat to health. Yes, smoking is bad but if a person has an eating disorder where they dont get enough nutrients, that persons health with deteriorate much faster than someone who smokes.

They are two seperate issues, Im not sure why you are comparing them. They are both unhealthy. People causing their body damage by smoking doesnt vallidate other people doing themselves harm by not getting proper nutrition. Its not just a matter of people trying to control how they look, its a psycological disorder.

Lol X) thanx 4 answering. Don’t forget though, I ASKED if it was any worse than smoking. I didnt claim they were equal. You have a point, it doesnt vallidate anything, I’m just saying why does one get more attention? And u said: bcuz 1 deteriorates faster.

Answer #3

Lets just put it this way, smoking is a choice, an eating disorder is a mental illness.

Answer #4

i didnt mean to imply thats what you thought! Just wanted to point out they dont directly relate to each other :)

Answer #5

Hey thanx 4 answering btw. But wait… cant an eating disorder be a choice too? Is it, in EVERY case, a disorder?

Answer #6

Haha, np. Again thanx 4 answering though!

Answer #7

it can be, but its triggered by a fake image in your brain, about you being over weight when your clearly not. Yes, anything that prevent nutrients from getting to your body is a serious problem.

Answer #8

Ok so wait a sec, lets consider this: I, for example, would like to lose a little bit of weight.Do I think I’m fat? No. I simply don’t like, nor do I feel comfortable with, certain areas of my body,(stomach for example). Now, you might say that this is brought upon by an image in my brain of what society’s “perfect” look is, no? Well, let me tell you that I am an artist. Therefore I pay attention to curves and lines. Do I think I’m fat? No. I don’t want to change me to get society to like me. I want to do it for me. Don’t get me wrong, I can understand that being anorexic is unhealthy for you. And I am in no way trying to promote it. However I must say, that I myself have considered trying being anorexic for a week. Would you say that I have a mental illness then? If you say yes, then tell me, did u say bcuz i’m ruining my body? If you did, then plz ask urself, would u also call some1 who smokes haveing a mental ilness cuz they 2 are ruining their body? No maybe not destroyed in the same time span.

Answer #9

Or lets say that that some1 thought that being x-tremely skinny was pretty? or to them, beautiful? (lol, no not me who thinks it’s pretty to b THAT skinny) Who is to say what beauty is? It doesn’t have rules, it’s just in the eye of the beholder.
