Eating afterbirth?

Just the other day I watched my sister have her baby. Then the dr. Asked did she want to keep her afterbirth, he said some people eat their afterbirth. Have you heard of this? And why do people eat afterbirth?

Answer #1

I know animals eat the afterbirth, but I have never heard of a human eating theirs nor a Dr even asking or suggesting if someone wanted to..gross!

Answer #2

yup that’s pretty much it. I would say it’s more ritualistic though because in this day and age, you don’t really need the extra nutrients… then again, you don’t really NEED to breast feed either, but some women still do.

Answer #3

I have heard of this. The afterbirth is actually called the Placenta, and that is a bunch of stored nutrients that were “built in” while the woman was pregnant. This was forming during pregnancy, so that it could be eaten after giving birth by the mother to start restoring vital nutrient levels lost during the birthing process. And I thought that health class would NEVER come in handy…
