Dogs have way better hearing than humans, just because you didnt hear anything doesnt mean he didnt. You've never heard of the dog whistles - extremely loud to dogs, humans cant even hear them.
ehh.. if you're a believer of paranormal activity, then maybe it could have been something like that??.. or maybe it just sensed something odd :)
