Dog having a really bad seizure!

At this moment my dog has been having a seizure for an hour and a half! She snaps out of it and then goes right back into one in like 2 minutes! I’m really scared. What do I do?! My Dad is hugging her right now and we’ve already given her 3 of her pills for these because she usually has them but there is usually only 1 not many consecutive ones and they only last for like 3 minutes!

Please! Help!

Any animal can have seizures just as easily as humans. If the seizure is lasting an hour and a half it is called status epilepticus and is an immediate emergency. When medication is given, if seizures still occur often, then the medication may need to be changed and/or dosage changed. Never give additional medication other than what is prescribed unless directed by vet. In the case of the dog mentioned in this forum, call the vet. If after office hours and a live answering service answers, tell them you were told to allow you to speak with the vet ASAP concerning a critical emergency(they may have the vet call you back-anyway I am the one telling you to call so you will be telling the truth). If unable to reach the vet, there are vet emergency hospitals listed on the internet and phone book. One example is ANIMAL EMERGENCY CENTER www.animalemergencycenter.com . It is open 24 hrs. Tel (414) 540-6710 • fax (414) 540-6720 .

My Chihuahua we had growing up was epileptic and was given Dilantin to take. your dog sounds like it is in statis epilepticus. Is it an older dog, is that why your Dad said they would put it to sleep?
There should be a veterinarian on call somewhere in town, call them and ask themi if they think you should bring the baby in or just wait it out. Now my dog never had seizures for that long, but I have seen humans in statis epilepticus and with us it is an emergency requiing immediate transport to the hospital.
Call around and find a vet on call and see what they have to say. you also said your Dad told you that he had taken the dog in like this before. Did he mean just having a seizure or for extended seizures like the baby;’s having now/? Call, it’s free. ; D

My dad said not to because they’ve taken her before and they can’t do anything about it and they would put her asleep

Answer #5

take her to the vet, it’ll help more than just hoping he gets better..I’m sure they’ll know what to do

Answer #6

depending on the levels of seizures the dog has, the humane thing to do may be to Euthinaze. I am so sorry you have this going on. When is the last time the dog was at the vet? Maybe the dose or the meds need to be changed, maybe it is time to let her go. Either way it is very tuff, but try to remember to do what is best for the dog.

This is an emergency…and there is a LOT a Vet can do…they give them phenobarbitol to stop seizing…one seizure following another for an hour may very well kill her anyway…

GET TO ANOTHER VET!!!

My dog had that before after she had her puppies, I dunno how she got it but the vet said it was becuase she was a small breed and she couldnt handel the puppies, they put her on meds and after she was fine, But When she was having them I would keep her in my lap on the floor and just hold her head and body so she didnt hurt herself to much then I would calm her down after she would have one and give her love, I think that helped her out a lot… I hope everything works out :(

They look very scary but it’s usually harder on the person watching than on the dog. He may be confused after wards so keep your distance but talk to him softly until he’s able to recognize you.

He’s not going to swallow his tongue. DON’T put your hand anywhere near his mouth. Protect him from accidental injury by wrapping him in a blanket until the seizure is over. Watch him carefully and even take notes. Report everything to the vet. He’ll want to know whether he was jerking all over or just very stiff, whether he lost consciousness or didn’t seem to recognize you, if he acted strangely before the seizure, and how long the seizure lasted. And of course, have your parents take him to the vet as soon as possible after the seizure - or if the seizure continues too long, take him while he’s having it.

Myy baby pug does that to she falls over makes a weird noise then pee’s then gets up and wag’s her tail like nothing ever happened… so my dad took her to the vet they gave us some liquid and pills its gone down a little rarely only happens at night know.

Find a different vet!!! My cat was seizing and we rushed him in the vet gave him opium or something to stop the seizure and saved his life. Chronic seizures in dogs and cats is not uncommon, and is very treatable inexpensively!
