Why does my dog keep coughing and acting like he is about to barf?
we just went on a short walk, He didn’t eat any grass.
Give him some water or a piece of bread. It sounds like he has something stuck in the back of his throat…it could be something he picked up or even a small piece of hair.

He could have a hairball or something, or maybe he ate something that’s making him feel sick. Make sure he has plenty of clean water. I would also suggest calling your vet, especially if he doesn’t stop doing it within 8 hours or so. Since animals can’t tell us what’s wrong, he could be sick or have something stuck in his throat that he can’t get out. If you don’t have a regular vet, just look one up in your area with a google search or the phone book. They will be able to tell you whether you should bring him in for an exam, or if it’s probably harmless.
Does your dog pull on his leash when he’s walking? If he does, perhaps the coughing is from a damaged trachea. You might want to have him checked out by a vet if pulling is an issue. A “Gentle Leader” will help remedy a pulling situation (does not put any pressure on their throat).
