Do knitting directions change if you’re left handed?

I’d like to begin knitting, but I’m left handed. To cast on and knit using directions from a beginner’s book, should I follow the directions the same as if I were right handed? Would the results be the same?

Hi sk8tersocal,

I don’t knit, but message boards say that you should try to retrain your brain to hold the needles as if you were right handed. Apparently, you’d otherwise have to read/write the instructions in reverse, which is super complicated.
