Do I have an eating disorder?

I’m a guy and about 4 months ago I got fed up with being fat. I started exercising and cut out all fried and greasy foods. I’d been skipping breakfast before this and eventually cutting foods out wasn’t enough, I had to cut out lunch. Then I cut out cheese and potatoes. Eventually I wouldn’t eat dairy or anything starchy and I had cut out lunch. So far I’ve lost 44 pounds and dinner is now no more.

In these past 4 months my health has been degrading also because I have a lot of trouble sleeping now. On average I get about 3 hours of sleep. A week ago I went to bed at 8:00 A.M. and woke up at 10:00 A.M. In this past 48 hour period I’ve only gotten 30 minutes of sleep.

Only very recently did I get the disturbing though that I might have an eating disorder. I’ve always been able to shake this off for two reasons. Number one is that I didn’t think guys got eating disorders. Number is that if I have an eating disorder how could I possible be aware of it? I also thought that the sleep thing was just something normal for my age.

Now I’m starting to get scared. I don’t go around my friends as often and I’ve isolated myself from my family. I have been getting very secretive about my diets and everything in my life in general for no apparent reason. I’ve been starting to feel sad a lot and I feel guilty for, once again, no apparent reason. I tried to talk to ask my health teacher several times and I always bail out at the last minute.

I never told this to anyone before and I want to know if this is normal. If it’s not normal I want to know how to make it stop. Any information would be of help. Thank you.

I asked this same question in the health catergory with the some information and I didn’t get much in the way of answers so I was hoping since this area gets more posts I could get more information and opinions.

oh, and also I’m 6 foot and weight 150

I think that you might be on your way to an eating disorder. It is okay to only eat selective food but you have to eat 3 meals a day to be healthy. try eating a healthy breakfast like eggs and then a healthy lunch like a salad and then a healthy dinner like some fish. try something like that and try exersizing but not over the top and you might sleep better

Eating Disorder FACTS:

The process of starvation associated with Anorexia Nervosa can affect most organ systems. Physical signs and symptoms include but are not limited to constipation, abnormally low heart rate, abdominal distress, dryness of skin, hypotension, fine body hair, lack of menstrual periods. Anorexia Nervosa causes anemia, cardiovascular problems, changes in brain structure, osteoporosis, and kidney dysfunction.

Self-induced vomiting can lead to swelling of salivary glands, electrolyte and mineral disturbances, and enamel erosion in teeth. Laxative abuse can lead to long lasting disruptions of normal bowel functioning. Complications such as tearing the esophagus, rupturing the stomach, and developing life-threatening irregularities of the heart rhythm may also result.

Sometimes those suffering with Anorexia and Bulimia do not appear underweight - some may be of “average” weight, some may be slightly overweight, variations can be anywhere from extremely underweight to extremely overweight. The outward appearance of a person suffering with an eating disorder does not dictate the amount of physical danger they are in, nor does is determine the severity of emotional conflict they are enduring.

Answer #9

My dad gave me sleeping pills once and they did nothing. I’m as energetic as possible and don’t stop moving. When in school at a desk I always twitch my legs. Constantly moving would make me lose more weight. I exercise when I get the chance as well. Sleeping is only my minor concern. I want to know how I could have an eating disorder (if I really do) and be aware of it.

It is said that 8 million people in the US have an eating disorder, and of that 8 million, 10% are men. This could be higher, because I am sure that many men do not want to come forward with it. Its good that you have realized that you may have a disorder.

“[Eating disorders] have been seen largely as an issue affecting women, and because of that, I think men have been far less likely to identify themselves as affected by it or to seek out treatment – much in the same way as men with breast cancer tend to show up in breast cancer clinics much, much later,” –D. Blake Woodside, MD.

“In fact, it’s more dangerous for men to develop anorexia nervosa than for females … because when males get down to the lowest weight ranges, they’ve lost more muscle and tissue, whereas [fat] is something you can lose for a period of time without repercussions,”

It is important that you do get on a regular diet. One where you are not starving yourself. When your body is starving its self, it does go into shock.. it feels under attack and that it needs to defend itself inorder to survive… So therefore your body keeps itself awake..

A healthy way of dieting would be proper excercise… and eating 6 small meals a day. Starving is not the way to go. Your body will automatically take anyfood you give it and store it to fat, because it doesnt know when it will eat again. Eating small meals, will keep your metabolism going…

Please seek help. Talk to your doctor. Yes you make think eating disorders in males are not out there… but they are.. And its good that you are recognizing it. Talk to someone so that you can get the help you need and not damage your body permantely… or even kill yourself.
