What's the difference in a broadband router, and one that isn't broadband?

I want a wireless router for my laptop, so I can have internet from my desktop. There is a broadband router that I was thinking about getting because of the price, but is it what I need? What does broadband router mean? How is it different that a regular wireless router?

Answer #1

I could be wrong, but my broadband router is connected to to my modem via my cable TV serivce, not through the phoneline, for which you would have an ADSL Router, where you recieve your internet servive via a phoneline. It’s just a difference in the type of service you get. But I think if you get your internet from the phoneline you will need and ADSL capable router. Don’t take my word as gosple though. Matty is pretty good with this tech stuff, maybe funmail him!

“Broadband” pretty much means you have DSL or Cable Internet. What a router does is splits the internet connect so it can be shared between multiple computers. Also should let those computer share files & printers. A wireless router also broadcast a radio signal that a wireless receiver card can pick up and therefor share the internet to your laptop so you don’t have to run a cord to the laptop. I have never heard of a non-broadband router, so some companies might be adding “Broadband” onto the name to make it sound faster. As long as it says to work with DSL and Cable internet you should be fine. But can you link the specific router you were looking at?

Netgear WGR614 Wireless-G 54Mbps Broadband Router - $39.00

Answer #4

All I want to know is, if this router will work for me. I am getting a laptop, and I want a router so I can pick up signals from my desktop. I have the charter bundle, (phone, internet, and cable.)

Answer #5

Should work just fine. I have had a bit of bad luck with Netgear routers having to be restarted every 3 or 4 days, and several reviews on newegg say they have had similar problems with this particular router, especially with the wireless. But my friend has been using a similar Netgear router for years now, and just has to restart it every other day or so.

Answer #6

Do you think I just buy a more expensive one, that I wouldn’t have to restart all the time, and that would work really good, and fast? Do you think I should get a Cisco?

Answer #7

Are you looking for broadband connection for business use, the I highly recommend you using EFM service for high speed broadband service.
