Diabulemia information
I was watching Dr Phil a few weeks back and he had a girl on there and she had been diagnosed with diabulemia. She was a diabetic, and she had to take shots for her sugar. When she would gain weight, or decide she wanted to lose it, she would skip her shots. She said that if she skipped her shots, then she would lose weight no matter what she ate or how much. I’m not familiar with this disease, or whatever you would like to call it. And I’m not a diabetic but I was wondering if anyone else could tell me a little bit more about it?
When you are type 1 diabetic your body doesn’t produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that enables carbohydrates (which break down into sugars)to leave your blood and enter your body cells. If a person doesn’t have insulin, they can’t get the carbs/sugars from their blood, so the body starves. After the liver’s store of carbohydrate (glycogen?) is used up the only fuel left is body fat. So, when a type 1 diabetic doesn’t take their insulin (regardless of if they eat loads of food or very little food at all)their body starts burning off loads of fat. sounds like an amazing diet, but when the fat is burned off so quickly ketones get released into the bloodstream and you get really acidic blood. (This also happens in the Atkins diet). This makes you really ill and can eventually send the person into a coma (or develop ketoacidosis). Diabulemia is when a diabetic purposely doesn’t take their insulin with the intention to loose weight.
People who are diabetic have high blood sugar. The body reacts to this and gets rid of glucose through your urine causing WEIGHT LOSS. Insulin returns your blood sugar levels to normal and causes you to store sugar causing weight gain. Skipping the shot will cause their blood sugar level to rise.
I’m pretty sure that’s how it works but don’t quote me on that.
