What's the definition of a "prep"?

Answer #1

I don’t believe there is an actual definition, as everyone has their own definition of a prep.

To me, a prep is an outgoing, fun, sometimes snobby person who is into cheerleading or sports, and likes to shop at the mall in stores such as Hollister, American Eagle, Abercrombie & Fitch, etc… They are usually the “popular kids” in school, and often feel they are better than everyone else. Also, they are usually wealthy.

It a label for those who conform to typical teenage behavior, in areas like clothing, school behavior, and sports participation, because preps usually are more ambitious and/or image-conscious than others. Popular belief is that preps hate nerds/goths/punks/etc, however, generally, preps pay little attention to other “types,” and those who hate preps with the most passion are those who were once preps and have recently gone away from their previous behavior, and often people who are posers intent on protecting their alternative-ness. Their parents are usually doctors, lawyers, or buisnessmen, and all went to college. All preps will go to college, often Ivy Legue schools, or small liberal arts colleges in New England (Middlebury, Trinity, Colby, Etc.), though some will go to the elite west coast schools. Preps will generally fill their college resumes with multiple AP classes and will have SAT tutors or courses to assue their entry into these small, elite, and expensive private colleges. Their lives are set up before they are born, most will go on to similarly professional, affluent, and prestigious career…

A preppy person I think of as kind of like a more conservative, but happy mood person. I think old preps were more defined, now prep has a very loosely given definition. The main components of a “prep” would be fashionable, but laid-back, with simplicity being the key. You can tell immediately whether some one looks put together or not. It’s the poise and the knowledge of how clothes fit you that gives that preppy look. But usually; Preppy generally means the wear.. Some people think that most or all preps are stereo typical & are intellectual. Not all are that way. & most of the ones that I know, haven’t had everything handed to them on a silver platter. Or are stuck up. Someone can dress goth and still be a stuck up snob with zero intellect, same with people who come from a middle class, or lower class bracket.. Thats just my opinion though!

The origins of preppy style came from the boarding schools that well heeled white anglo-saxon protestant families would send their kids to. I had seen the preppy style all my life; everyone who belonged to the local yacht club dressed that way; I didn’t even know there was a name for it. I was in high school in the late 1970’s and I saw the counter-culture hippie and freak styles give way to kids emulating the wealthy with preppy clothes. The preppy look was boat shoes without socks, button down oxford or polo shirts, cardigan sweaters, khakis shorts or slacks, and blazers with school ties. Now I see the move to preppy styles as a a predictor of things to come with Reagan winning in 1980 and the idealism of the 60’s and early 70’s giving way to the greed and corruption of the 80’s.
