Deep cut on bottom of foot

Two weeks ago my son cut two of his toes at the base where they attach to his foot on a tin can lid. He had the stitches removed by the doctor. She seemed to think it was healing okay, but did not say this with much confidence. It does not look infected but the skin has not even healed over. If I pull the toes back a little, I can see the cut is still open. It seems to me like it should at least appear to be healed on the outside even though it still is healing on the inside. It also doesn’t really hurt anymore but he seems to be able to move it although not as much as the other foot. is this normal for the outside to not even be healed? he also has put absolutely no pressure on it that would keep it open like this.

from my knowledge the toes take a while to heal but dont worry it will heal all the way and he might just to afraid to put pressure on it.
