Could religion be the tool to vanquish ignorance?

One thing I’d really like to see: people loving each other. Nope, not physically. Spiritually. Leaders of any faith - Christian, Muslim, Catholic, Judaic, calling upon their faithful to love their fellow human beings.

Do me a small favor: the next time you meet a stranger, tell them you love & respect them, as a human being. I’ve traveled the world over, many times, I’m 30 years old, and I’ve met good people everywhere. It’s when people don’t understand the “other people” or strangers that incidents happen, that hate born of ignorance happens.

Religion, in it’s best form, could be a tool used to drive ignorance from the minds of the faithful. I don’t know if that will happen one day, or not, but I’d really love it if people would consider this: All of us, no matter what our faith, are no more (or less) close to god than the next person. God, in all religions, isn’t some being you can touch, hold, caress, or point to. God is nebulous. Given that fact, and the distance between all of us and God, Allah, is equal, aren’t we all equal? :)

I dunno. Religion seems to CAUSE more ignorance than vanquish it…

thedude, some of your views are similar to those of the Baha’i. If you haven’t learned of this church you might look into it. Baha’i view Abraham, Krishna, Moses, Zoroaster, Buddha, Jesus, Mohammad, the Bab, and Baha’u’llah as all messengers of God who build on previous teachings. They believe in one God and that all religions worship different aspects of an infinite God beyond our comprehension. The only part of their teachings I have a big issue with is their views on homosexuality which I consider backward but in their defense they still welcome homosexuals into their church and are against discrimination against them.

I believe what my Bible says - ‘you must be born again’ - meaning the only access to Heaven is through having Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior - He paid the price for ALL of us on that cross - all of us are free to accept or reject Him - I, like you, am no better or no worse than anyone else, but I am also a sinner saved by His grace.

the dude, I think that yes it could be the tool to vanquish ignorance. Here’s a couple of points that might help. Romans 2 verse 11,” For there is no partiality with God’, in other words He doesn’t play favorites. Next Romans 3 verse 10,” there is none righteous,no, not one”, indicates that no human is infalliable. Romans 3 verse 23,”for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” We ALL have sinned making us equal partakers of choosing to do our own self will. Most of us have heard the story of the good Samaritan. Luke 10 verses 30 - 37. A certain man went down to Jerusalem from Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothes wounding him and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, (or temple priest), when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, (who by the way hated Jews with a passionate loathing), as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, had compassion on him, and went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him,’ Take care of him; and whatsoever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So which of these three do you think was a neighbor to him who fell among thieves? And he said,” He who showed mercy on him.” And Jesus said,” Go and do likewise.” Even if you don’t want to believe in Christ, and you should, this parable if lived out, as demonstrated by the Samaritan, in all people would certainly help destroy ignorance. Hope this helps.

WE are taught to love… period… and that means our enemies… so, if we follow that command… we will love those of other religions… that is not the same thing as believing what they teach or stand for… but, if we love them, we can be good to them, and respect them as a person… I can find no grounds for doing otherwise.
