Short Answer:
brush gently with an old toothbrush dipped in washing detergent. Rinse off with water and dry.

Detailed Answer: If the gold is 18 carat, it will resist almost all tarnishing effects, and the only necessary cleaning is to remove surface deposits - typically oil/grease from the skin, fine flakes of dead skin, dust and similar fine debris that has been bound by the grease.

The best way to clean such rings is to brush gently with a toothbrush dipped in almost any non-abrasive cleaning agent.

Some people suggest toothpaste, but I advise against it - many toothpastes contain abrasive whitening compounds that can leave very fine scratches on the surfaces.

An old remedy is to use gin as the cleaning agent, but it simply assists in breaking down the oil and grease just like any other alcohol (or indeed soap / detergent) would

Avoid cleaning tarnished lower quality gold alloy rings (e.g. 14 carat) using bleach / chlorine based cleaning agents, as they may react with the alloying metals.

Answer #5

taking it to the jewelers would be best. detergent probably isnt the best thing to use, to clean it easily, use an old toothbrush and some toothpaste, that cleans gold and silver really well

Answer #6

A mixture of light detergent and water can be used to soak gold rings for 10 to 20 minutes. when ring has soaked, rinse with warm water. Or cover the gold ring with non-gel toothpaste and scrub with an old toothbrush to clean off any dirt . Rinse with water, and scrub all toothpaste off. Pat it dry with a wash cloth. Hope this helps.

Answer #7

Professional jewelers are happy to clean rings using detergent (as I describe above).

In my experience they neither use, nor recommend the use of, toothpaste,….. though in principle there is no problem using a non-abrasive toothpaste. However, the average person is not likely to know the difference between those which are and those which are not abrasive. Here is a link to professionally sound advice:

Answer #9

If you want to do it yourself, then just go to your local drugstore (like Walgreens or something of that sort) and purchase a gold-jewelery cleaning kit. Or if need be, bring it to a jewelers counter and ask them if they can do it.

Answer #13

If it’s an old ring that hasn’t been cleaned in awhile, I would definitely take it to a jeweler’s. They can then check the claws on the diamond to ensure that they are still doing their job (ie: holding the diamond firmly in place). If that checks out OK, they will put it in the ultrasonic cleaner and buff the gold if necessary (will remove any scratches). Your ring will come out looking like new.

Answer #14

Toothpaste does a great job, and also baking soda make a paste out of it.
