“How to “quit” smoking?”

You can’t “quit smoking”. You CAN “become a non-smoker”.

There is a big difference in the way your mind and body reacts to the two attempts. In “quitting smoking” your mind and body tell each other that you are trying to deprive it of something it likes and needs, therefore it works hard at preventing you from succeeding.

In “becoming a non-smoker” you successfully attain your goal while not giving your mind and body a chance to perceive that they are being deprived.

Along with the above attitude change, you can help achieve your goal by having on hand some hard candy. Whenever you feel the urge to smoke simply place a piece of candy in your mouth.

Don’t try to refrain from smoking “forever”. Simply refrain for the next couple of hours.

I, personally, know that the above works. I smoked for 30 years and was up to two packs a day. I successfully became a non-smoker 22 years ago. It wasn’t always easy and I still have nightmares that I’ve started smoking again and “blown” my smoke-free record but then I wake up and am thankful it was only a dream.

The candy I used was “Gobstopper” Jaw Breakers. The lasted about 10 minutes each and effectively replaced the craving for a cigarette.

You, too, can become a non-smoker, even if you’re surrounded by people who smoke. It is your choice. When offered a cigarette you don’t say “no thanks, I’m trying to quit” but instead state “no thanks, I don’t smoke”.

Good Luck!

if you really really want to, see a smoking cessation nurse, in your local doctors clinic. they’ll give you all the tools, but above all, you need to really want to with a large serving of will power!

will power’s it though mate…you can have all the nicotein supplements…but they only reaplace the nicotein, not the habit of it.

if you can’t see a smoking cessation nurse, then, get some NRT from your local chemist, huge variety of stuff available to suit your needs…and just do it, avoid socialising with smokers for a little while…just get used to being a ‘non-smoker’ in an environment where there’s less influence.

my hubby has given up, when he did he couldn’t even have a glass of wine, he assosiated alcohol with cigarettes, and when he stopped, he used patches, but they arn’t suitable for everyone (skin conditions etc)

find out what suits you, and giving up isn’t something you can do on a whim, you have to really decide to do it, pick a day (within the next week) and get your NRT, and stick to it.

if your friends smoke and they try and encourage you to smoke again, their not your real friends. say to your friends - clearly! that you are giving up, and you need their support - they are NOT to offer you cigarettes etc. however, don’t let them be all like ‘oh no, your giving up, you can’t have one’ becuase you won’t like being told what to do, even though you want to do it, and will resent giving up…

good luck, you can do it, two and half years ago you wern’t a smoker…you lived without it once upon a time! :OD

Its really hard but you should think about how nasty it is! I never smoked in my life my parents did but I know that it took my dad a long time to stop smoking!

There are a dozen ways and some work for some and some for others. You are addicted to nicotine and you need to reduce that addiction. When you buy a pack, but some razor blades too. Cut 1/4” off each cigarette and do this for a week. Next week cut 1/2” off, next 3/4” and so on. You’re reducing your nicotine intake slowly and you won’t feel anything. If you do, just make it two weeks for each reduction. Absurdly simple, but it will help - you need other resources too, like trying to keep away from unhelpful people who are jealous of your success.
