how do i tell my Christian parents that im an atheist?

i dont want to hurt them or get kicked out for having difrent religious view

Answer #1

If you think they will not accept the fact that you are not Christian, and you are an Atheist…simply don’t tell them. Religion is a personal choice, and doesn’t need to be shared with everyone. I suggest keeping it to yourself.

Answer #2

just don’t even say a word about it. like my family is believes alot in religion while i don’t believe in it alot very little i keep my opinion to myself because it is just going to cause trouble and drama

Answer #3

I don’t think that you can avoid hurting them, unless they are very understanding Christians. The thing you really need to think about is whether or not they will kick you out. Getting kicked out isn’t worth it, keep it a secret until you’re older if you seriously think that will be an issue. I wasn’t very silent with all my questions about god/s as I was growing up, so by the time I told my mom about my atheism, it wasn’t a surprise. She doesn’t like it, but she accepts it. And, I think that is how most caring parents will be. There is no easy way to tell your parents something like this. They might tell you that you are going to the fire pit below, they may say hurtful things (my mom still does this), and you will have to try your best to keep calm. You stay calm, and they will most likely follow once they cool down a bit. Have your reasons and a good explanation planned before telling them. If you think they will really flip out, write a letter and leave it for them to see in the morning when you won’t be awake. The word “atheist” seems to scare a lot of Christians; I’d use the word “nonbeliever” first. I’ve known that I was an atheist for about 7 years now, and still haven’t told my (more religious) grandparents. Being an atheist to many Christians in the US is one of the worst things someone can be, sometimes it is best to keep it a secret for your own safety and peace of mind. You know your family, so you should know whether or not they’ll seriously want to disown you or send you to some church camp. I understand how hard it is to keep something you believe a secret, and I understand you wanting to let it out. Don’t keep it a secret if it is bothering you. People’s world views are a major part of who they are, nonbeliever or believer, keeping it a secret may mess with your mind in the long run. Soooo,if you think they’ll kick you out, wait to tell them until your older and can afford to get kicked out. Sorry for rambling on lol.

hmm, ok thanks people.

Answer #5

I agree-with the person above. We all have our own thoughts and beliefs, and that’s fine.

Answer #6

if they are Christians, they wont kick you out unless their mind is focused on being dominant . Granted they will try yo convert you, but nothing else bad should happen.

Answer #7

I agree with Angelee27. Further, there is no real need to announce it when you have the thought that it will not be accepted. You should wait until you have become independent from them and have a circle of supporting friends that can help you deal with any negative feedback from your parents or others. Possibly after you have moved out, and are on your own. If then.

Good Luck!! PS. I am an Atheist, also, and belong to an Atheist group in PA that has 6 or 7 chapters. It is estimated that 7-15% of the US is Atheist, Agnostic, or Secular Humanist.

Answer #8

I keep that stuff to myself

Answer #9

Don’t tell them right out, just ask some questions.

Like…

If the earth is 6000 years old, then what about the dinosaurs?

Why does god say Thou Shall not Kill and then himself 2,270,365 people while Satan only kills 10, and part of those were shared with god as a bet? I mean, who’s the bad guy?

(There’s a lot of material here)

When god killed everyone on earth except Noah and friends, why did he insist on killing all the animals as well? What the hell did they do?

And just be ready for the question, who “created the universe then?” to which the anser is; no one knows why it’s here but if god did it, then who made god? and if they say god has always existed, then why not leave out a step and say the universe has always existed. Adding a God doesn’t help explain anything. Besta luck :)
