How do I best "characterize" (stereotype/label/define/group) a new acquaintance?

I’m trying to figure out a general group label (and please skip the lecture on how labels were made for envelopes and soup cans) for a woman who likes renaissance festivals, steam punk (NOT PUNK ROCK), is a little earthy but not a hippie, works with animals, is creative, takes belly dancing lessions… I think many of us who have lived for a while have encountered someone like this, but has anyone come up with a title for this sub category? Not gypsy, not hippie, not punk, not goth, not emo…. throw some other stereotypes at me please, I’m a sociologist, I realize the ethical ramifications behind my question. I’m really more interested in the possibility of a classification existing than actually using the label. THANKS!

Answer #1

I’d call her ‘unique’.

Answer #2

Or how about ‘awesome’ :D

Answer #3

Magical :D

Answer #4

Interesting. I don’t stereotype or “classify” friends really…I did in high school but after you get to know a person beyond the basic A/G/L, it’s really hard to do so.

Consider what scientists use to classify subspecies, etc…do enough people know the canon of various attributes with which to define N permutations of subculture?

I’d say “no”…as I can only think of a dozen or so off the top if my head, and those are one or two dimensional characterizations…where for science in animal classification, they use more than that to define subspecies.

Does that help? :)

Answer #5

haha all I can think of is the bohemian social group in the sims!

Answer #6

Awesome jeremy, You’re totally not answering my question but at least you gave it an intelligent go ;) I agree, I don’t label friends, I don’t label myself and I try not to label others. In this particular case, my close friend and I were discussing this person and were trying to establish a term for her “je ne sais quoi”. Let’s face it, we’ve all done this on occasion. Attempted to say “well, he/she is sort of like …X” . I’m not seeking to do a true categorization of a cultural subspecies, or even a basic interpretive study on the permutations of social classifications in subcultures and various social milieus (I’m on this website…seriously) I just want to know if there is even a quasi established generalization for someone of this nature.

Answer #7

‘Special’ in my opinion

Answer #8

I actually think Bohemian is pretty right on Danielle! THanks!

Answer #9

My long winded answer was basically my way of saying “not to my knowledge” whilst simultaneously trying to sounds slightly more intelligent ;)

Answer #10

I got that ;) it was cute and appreciated. I’m stumped too, but I think the bohemian suggestion was on the right track. And as I am not one who particularly enjoys employing the abused generally derogatory “teen” stereotypes (goth/emo/punk/jock/nerd/scene, etc) I prefer to think that by using the term bohemian I’m referring to this woman in descriptive terms rather than classifying her.

Answer #11

I agree with Danielle…great answer! :)
