Boxer in Heat

My 14 month old Boxer just started her first heat. Even though she runs and plays outside quite a bit, she’s inside and sleeps inside. I purchased doggie diapers (Pupsters); however, blood still seeps thru the little opening in the back and gets drops whereever she sits or lays.

What product is best to use? What do you recommend as far as “when” she needs to wear a diaper? Outside as well as inside?

Answer #1

the best thing is if you are not planning on breeding her is to get her spayed

Answer #2

She was going to be spayed on the 9th; however, I rescheduled it till after her heat. Thank you.

Answer #3

You can get her spayed during her heat, it may cost a little more. That is what we do at the hospital I work at. Well her heat will last about 3 weeks, There are all different types of things out there to use, I friend of mine had plastic like dipers that you could put pads in, I never heard her complain so I am guessing they worked, think they are a little pricey though

Answer #4

I use an infant’s receiving blanket when my dog is in heat.

I just fold it in half in a triangle and cut a hole for the tail. I then fasten it under the belly with a safety pin.

It works for my St. bernard, so I can’t see how it wouldn’t help with your boxer.

The vet said there would be an extra cost. I feel better about waiting at this point. I heard that if there’s swelling on the outside, there’s swelling on the inside, which could make for a more challenging surgery.

The diapers, liners, pads can be pricey. Thanks for the advice. Appreciate it!

Thank you ichybanarky for the advice on the receiving blanket. I will try that.
