When a body is found shot in a house that is on fire...was the person dead or alive when the fire was started if there is no soot in their noses or lungs?

A year ago my brother in law was found dead along with his uncle, they claim that he shot his uncle then started the fire and then shot himself. Yet no soot was found in his lungs or nose…wouldnt he have breathed it in if he was alive when the fire started?

I’m sorry to hear that.

Not necessarily, you have to be next to a fire for quite a while before he soot gets into your lungs, almost suffocating. It could be that he shot his uncle, lit a fire with petrol or something and immediately shot himself.

I never thought of that. I guess you loose your since of reason when you dont want to believe something.

Yes, I know. Like after my grandmothers death I kept making up all these scenes of how I could have helped her etc. etc, in the meanwhile there wasn’t anything I could do, she never told anyone how depressed she felt. It helps getting an outsiders view something. Good luck to you guys though. I’ve lost enough people to know that death is tough and it takes you a while to be able to cope.
