Does a few hours make a difference with your birth control pill?

Do you HAVE to take the pill at the same time EVERYDAY?? Im suppost to take it at 9 I usually do. But is it ok if I take it late like 10 like once a week? Will it increase my chance of getting pregnant?

Answer #1

An hour later won’t make much difference to its effectiveness. It is better to take it at the same time, but if you miss the time by 2 or 3 hours once it is ok.

oh and this is presuming you are taking the combination birth control pill (containing estrogen and progesterone). The mini pill you have to be much more accurate with.

Answer #2

Really you should take your pill everyday at the exact same time. If you take it off your normal time you do decrease the effectiveness of your pill. If 9 is a hard time to take it everyday try another time when you know you will be awake like noon or 9 at night instead of 9 in the morning. If want to switch what time you take it just wait until after your sugar pill week of pills, then on the first active pill day take it at your new time.

No, its ok to be a few hours late. The only effect is the more late you are taking it, the less effective it is. But if you take it at 10 instead of 9, you’ll be fine. Your body doesnt actually keep track of the 24-hour day cycle like we do, so as long as you take it around 9, you’ll be fine.

I freaked out when I first started started birth control and made my boyfriend wait a month because I took my pill an hour late. My nurse laughed when I told her.
