scientology was founded by Ron L hubbard in 1950. their text is Dianetics. scientologists believe in engrams (bad past experiences) prevent individuals from realizing their own human potential. Dianetic counseling (calling auditing) leads a person to become "clear" of engrams and attain full human potential. The only problem? Ron L hubbard in the 1930's and 1940's wrote as a fictional author and was quoted "writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wanted to make a million dollars, the best way wojld be to start his own religion" (announced at a New Jersey science fiction convention). the following year he release Dianetics.
Summary of Beliefs: - Man's mind is simplified by dividing it into 2 major parts: the analytical mind and the reactive mind. -The analytical mind works like a perfect computer, never making a mistake. -the reactive mind is totally stimulus and response based. -The reactive mind hold mental picture images of past experiences called engrams. -The problem of humanity is that the reactive mind interupts the analytical mind with engrams -the solution to the reactive mind interrupting the analytical mind is to rid the reactive mind of all engrams -the goal of dianetics is to clear all the engrams to clear the engrams you must undergo a process of auditing. which costs between $200,00-400,000. -Once you are clear you must go through more "levels" of clear to gain full understanding. -those who reach the OT level III are releaved the story of Xenu and his Galactic Confederacy -Xenu, an alien ruler of the Galatic Confederacy, 75 million yrs ago struggled with overpopulation -he brought billions of people to earth in a space craft blowing them up in volcanoes with hydrogen bombs -their souls then clustered together and stuck to the bodies of the living. -scientologists have argued that the published accounts of the Xenu story and other teachings are taken out of context and presented for the purpose of ridiculing their religion.
Critiques: -the founders own quote -hubbards degrees have come under quesiton since Sequoia Univ. is unreconized diploma mill -hubbard called himself a nuclear physicist bt failed the only class on molecular and atomic physics. -the American Scientific Assoc. in spet 1950 said Dianeticss is "not supported by empirical evidence of the sort required for the establishmnet of scientific organization -in short, hubbards scientology is another form of his science fiction rather than a true picture of reality.
hope this helps :)
"Scientology teaches that people are immortal spiritual beings who have forgotten their true nature. Its method of spiritual rehabilitation is a type of counseling known as auditing, in which practitioners aim to consciously re-experience painful or traumatic events in their past in order to free themselves of their limiting effects. Study materials and auditing courses are made available to members in return for specified donations. Scientology is legally recognized as a tax-exempt religion in the United States and some other countries, and the Church of Scientology emphasizes this as proof that it is a bona fide religion. In other countries such as France, Germany and the United Kingdom, Scientology does not have comparable religious status." coutesy of wikipedia http://funadvice.com/r/3jt7s1f5q7
