bad doggie

my sister has a chihuahua ( however you spell it, long name, little dog ). I’ve heard that they like to eat their own doo doo, and this was confirmed as I watched it do that today. I thought I had heard there is a dietary supplement she could give it that would make it stop “doo-ing” that … anyone heard of it? thanks…

It is called FOR-BID it is a powder you put on their food. and it make it less tasteful for them, not like it is to begin with, but they think so.

Yes we sell it at work, but I can’t think of the name of it. I will check tomorrow when I get to work. If they eat their own you give it to them, if they eat others you give it to them. There are a lot of reason’s they do this, but that is not your question. You can look that up on the internet if you want to. And your spelling is right on.

LOL…German Shepherd owners thing THEY are more prone…I think it’s just a doggie thing, and not breed specific.

There are many “remedies” on the market that supposedly make the stool foul tasting (if you can believe it wasn’t, in the first place:))…I’ve heard of putting MSG into their food, as well as finely chopped pineapple.

The one way I do know that works, is picking it up immediately after they go…

Some dogs just do that. I don’t think it is chihuahuas in particular. It may be a habit from puppyhood, just try to distract the dog in a positive direction and she may get over it. However, it may be true she is “doo-ing it” (as you so gracefully supplied) to get nutrients she, ah, missed the first time around. Check a petstore to see if there is such a supplement. I haven’t seen it myself though (the supplement, not dogs eating their own poop.)

Coprophagia, or the eating of stool (feces) or bowel movements, is a relatively common problem in dogs. There are both medical and behavioral reasons why dogs eat feces. You may be able to stop your dog from eating his own feces by altering the taste of the feces. This can be done by placing a substance on the feces that has an unpleasant taste. Some limited success has been received with injecting pepper juice into the feces or applying seasoning salt or meat tenderizer to the food.

For more information, read more about coprophagia here: http://www.petplace.com/dogs/coprophagia-in-dogs/page1.aspx
