Are mechanics required to be honest?

In some countries, auto mechanics are fined heavily for overcharging customers, and could lose their certification if they engage in shady business practices. I was just wondering if the same is true in the US, since I hear that Americans always complain about dishonest mechanics.

Umm, no mechanic is honest, It’s hard to prove them wrong so they don’t get in trouble, a good number of mechanics will break something else so you come back later.

Just like yesterday, they told me I needed a “Coolant Flush” which all they do is stick a hose in your radiator and let it overflow for a few minutes till all the brown is out, and they charge $75 for that.

LMFAO. It doesn’t matter what your occupation is.. you should always be honest. But since we’re not perfect, we are dishonest some of the time. So I would have to say yes, they can be fined. Our else our justice system would be tragically flawed. Haha I’m high.

An independent mechanic is under a lot of pressure to be honest. There are fair trade laws that regulate business, but the primary concern is his customer base. His business and livlihood depend upon repeat business and word of mouth advertising. When you find a mechanic you trust, tell your friends and neighbors about it. If you feel you have been screwed, you don’t need to return.
