Any suggestions about getting my cat involved with my guests?

So I have a cat named Cali (yes she is a calico… lol)… she is about a little over a year in a half! She is GREAT with Joe and I, but when it comes to others, boy it is a different story!! She doesn’t hide or anything like that… but she will just stare the person down, or maybe come up and smell them and run to her chair in the living room and stare some more!! I don’t mind that, but when someone tries to pet her, she hisses and scratches them!!! Sometimes I let my guests know she is a little shy and needs some time, and if you would like to pet her you MUST let her smell you for a little first but even that doesn’t work at times!! I did notice that she does not like most women unless she knew them from when she was a kitten! Is there anything I can do to get her more involved with our guests or start to trust that people we bring in are ok?? And if you have any suggestion about any kind of cat toys or cat treats I would be glad to try them out!!

Thank you!

I have a cat that is very friendly and will come jump up next to any one that comes to visit. I have another cat that. in all his years has never like anyone but me.

I once said something about this in a group I belong to. I said Scruffy didn’t like anyone but me and the other member said that is called loyalty.

I thought about it and to a cat it is. Your cat is loyal to you. Let her be herself as phrannie said.

Cat’s are funny that way, they are the way they are and there is not much you can do to change them… Some cats are always going to be more shy, or less approachable than others (mine still runs and hides behind the sofa even when my ex roomate, who was living with me when I first got her, comes over…) It sounds as if she doesnt like anyone invading her space and is letting them know… You may be able to teach her that hissing and scratching are unacceptable, but I doubt you are ever going to make her happy to see other people… You could try having them feed her treats, but I honestly think asking for a personality overhaul may not happen…

Just tell people to leave her alone…cats pick their people, not vice versa…if this is her demeanor, then so be it! Only if she starts getting aggressive, would I intervene. They aren’t like dogs, who are social animals instinctively…most cats (except lions) are loners by nature…The fact that they co-exist with us, at all, I think is a miracle in it’s own right.

I had Dave for 14 years…we had GOOD friends, people who’d been around us for at least that long…who were totally surprised to find out we even had a cat…Dave was totally anit-social…he loved me, tolerated Greg…ADORED the dogs, but that was the total of his social life.
