If you continually rebuilt your house by removing “old” “worn out” or damaged bricks and routinely replacing them other (not necessarily new) bricks, it would in time get completely relaced, and many of the bricks would not have exactly the same colour and texture as the original bricks.

Your body pretty much does that sort of routine replacement to its cellular structure throughout your life (many times over). The replacement is done using materials that are available from your diet, under genetic & hormonal control. Changes to diet at critical times, and localized disturbances in endocrine concentrations due to changes in the blood supply (e.g. due to minor injury will have a bearing on such things as pigmentation.

As to the “square” shape of this dark brown anomaly: Your brain is predisposed to interpret complex variations in the form of simple recognizable patterns - I suspect that the “square” is something like an optical illusion similar to the recognition of faces in cloud structures - the face isn’t really there but your mind interprets the complex jumble of random colour variations as a face because human minds have evolved to identify human facial features very rapidly and readily.

Genetically controlled localized pigmentation patches are extremely difficult to explain - Imagine how hard it would be to put into plain words WHY a leopard has spots, but a tiger has stripes, let alone why one particular spot or stripe has a particular position and shape.

I guess that the genetic code you inherited from your parents caused an approximately square shaped darker region that has always been there but did not show up so much previously, when the surrounding area of the iris was uniformly darker. Now that your pigmentation level has changed to a lighter shade, the dark “square” shows up more noticeably.

Imagine trying to spot a dark birthmark on heavily sun-tanned skin - it would not show up very much, but when the sun-tan fades dramatically over winter the dark birthmark becomes more evident.

You can see the effect easily by noting the loss of fine detail in an image on your monitor if you reduce the brilliance so that everything gets darker.

When your irises were darker, you did not notice the fine detail was there (but it probably always was there).
