Can you be anorexic without knowing?

Hi, I am 5 foot 4 inches and i weigh 90 lbs. The doctors say i should be at least 108 lbs. My friends and family think I am anorexic but I always tell them that I am not. I have quite a few of the symptoms such as insomnia, frequent sore throats, dizziness, headaches, and “unusual food rituals”. From the research I have done on the disorder I have learned that most anorexics are both good in school and good athletes. I am a gifted student am one of the best female runners in my school as well as play a lot of sports. But, I do eat. I mean I eat 3 meals a day, my parents say I barely eat anything but I think i eat pretty well. I need to know if I have a problem, I am so confused. Thanks!

To me it just sounds like you have a fast metabolism.. you may be a bit underweight but you’re healthy for the most part. You’re only anorexic if you’re afraid of food of purposely avoid it for fear of weight gain. If you want to gain weight eat a bit more, but I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Answer #2

I suppose. but it’s difficult not to notice your ribs protuding.

Answer #3

No. Please, I’m in a similar situation, 89 lbs and 5’2, and for awhile when I was even more underweight my doctors had my whole family convinced I was anorexic. People will try and tell you that’s the only way you can be that thin, but thruthfully, some girls like us just have good metabolisms. If you feel healthy and aren’t wishing to lose weight, I don’t see how you could be anorexic. Remember than anorexia is a disease and not a BMI or a number on a scale. :)

Answer #4

anorexia is when your purposeley starve yourself or eat a lot less food than you should be, usually to loose weight but soem people do it to have control over their body. however sometimes this might not be know to soemone with anorexia or any other eating disorder. they could have the eating disorder but THINK they eat normally or are a healthy weight when in fact there not. you should see a doctor for more information. write down a list of VEERYTHING you have to eat and drink each day for a few days to a week, and bring that with you to the doctors, obviously if your eating less than you should be they will tell you that

Answer #5

YES. from my experience with anorexia, the person suffering with the disease is usually of the opinion that they are fat when they are not. So i would say that it is possible that a person could not know that they are anorexic without knowing it.

Answer #6

Only if you do not know what anorexia is. If you know the symptoms and you have them, then you show know.

Answer #7

You’ll know if you’re an anorexic or not. But if you are unsure here is the DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for Anorexia Nervosa: A. Refusal to maintain body weight at or above a minmally normal weight for age and height (e.g., weight loss leading to maintenance of body weight less than 85% of that expected or failure to make expected weight gain during period of growth, leading to body weight less than 85% of that expected). B. Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though underweight. C. Disturbance in the way in which one’s body weight or shape is experienced; undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, or denial of the seriosness of the current low body weight. D. In post-menarcheal females, amenorrhea, that is, the absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles. (A woman is considered to have amenorrhea if her periods occur only following hormone, e.g., estrogen, administration) Specify type: Restrictive type: During an episode of anorexia nervosa, the person does not regularly engage in binge eating or purging behavior (i.e. self induced vomiting or the misuse of laxitives or diuretics). Binge-eating/purging type: During the episode of anorexia nervosa, the preson has regularly ingaged in binge eating or puring behaviour (i.e. self-induced vomiting or the misuse of laxatives or diuretics).

Ok, so if you don’t have any of those caracteristics, then you don’t have anorexia. But if you’re worried about not gaining weight and being underweight, go see a dietician.

Answer #8

The reason I say that you’ll know, is because most anorexics try to hide what they are doing regarding excercise and eating habbits, because they know they are harming themselves and if someone finds out will try to help them by getting them do go into therapy and gaining back the weigth they have lost.
