Why did my 2 month old pitbull pup growl at me?

Prior to this he was bitting me and to teach him “no” I held his mouth closed and said “no”. then he was very hyper so I held him beside me to get him to calm down and by saying “relax”. He was ok with that and after he left my side is when ii noticed him looking at me and growling. I told him “no” firmly but he did it again. Why? What did I do wrong and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

Alot of puppies go through this. You need to continue to discipline him and correct him both when he bites and growels. Dont let him sit there and growl at you without correcting him. A light tap on the butt and a stern no usually works. If he continues to do it you may need to kennel him to punish him (assuming you dont already kennel him). When he growls he gets a stern no and put in his kennel for five minutes. This always worked with our pits. You need to correct him now though and get his behavior under control because pits dont have the best reputation and if hes growls and bites at people they will be quick to call the pound on him.

Its both a puppy thing and a dominant thiing. Pit bulls tend to be dominant dogs and its very important that you are the pack leader. Becoming pack leader does not mean being physically aggressive, do not hit your dog There are some simple nonviolent ways to become pack leader

  1. Training your dog. Train him every day, perferrable several times a day in ten minute period/ Training should be positive reward focused.
  2. Do not let him up on the furniture/bed without you giving the ok first.
  3. Go through doors first
  4. When you feed him , make his food, than leave it on the counter where he can see it, eat a cookie or something small and then feed him. This shows him you are incharge as you eat first.
  5. When you start getting him out for walks do not let him walk infront of you, he should either be beside or slightly behind you.

With a dog like a Pit bull it is very important that you have control at all times. Understandably he is young right now, but they grow quickly and if you start early it will be easier on you later. Be sure to socialize him like crazy. Pit bulls don’t always do the best with other dogs so get him out and introduce him to every nice dog to can.

I would recommend taking him to obedience classes as soon as he is old enough. Sadly, Pit bulls have a bad reputation, so you have the extra task of ensuring he is very well behaved. Its up to you to show others what great dogs Pit Bulls can be. Good luck
