Why do you think abstinence only education is still being promoted by certain segments of the population?

when it has been shown to be completely pointless and ineffective?

Answer #1

Easy. Those in power wish to do what they can to prevent the “unwashed masses” from buying a clue on how they’re getting worked over.

Relgion is a tool…miseducation is another one…media outlets with huge bias is another.

It’s all about resource control. The top echelong lifestyle, earnings, etc are so far removed from reality…well, if you had endless power, wouldn’t you be endlessly corrupted and probably do anything to maintain that?

Imho, you would…I’ve seen enough in action to determine that anybody with a certain critical mass of power or authority arrives at a point of corruption.

…..and of course, “certain segments” of the population truly believe that abstinance until marriage is the right way to go, and to them it it is not pointless.

Things have changed….society has changed…..girl got pregnant when I was young, but I never heard any WANTING to get pregnant, it was the big mistake. On here, I here girls 13 and 14 wanting a baby. That is shift in thinking. I’m sure the media has lot to do with that….

I often wonder if by promoting abstinence, we are actually promoting sex because we make it seem so forbidden. We tell kids about the risks involved and in some cases the morals (I don’t really have sexual morals, but just saying), and in doing that, we make it seem like something that is incredibly desirable. Why else would so many adults have it? We forbid weed and alcohol for teens, and that just makes them want to smoke and get high. I fear that we do the same for sex. We bring a subject they may no have even thought about to the forefront of their minds, and it stays. At least, to a degree, a lot of places have tried to gear education towards the “safe sex” approach, saying don’t do this, but if you do, try this. With that in mind though, we also give kids a chance to raise fake babies to “see how hard it is”, but that only makes things exciting. I remember getting excited about taking this fake doll home as a child. It was cool. That could be the very mentality that leads so many children to wanting a baby when they are clearly neither ready nor responsible enough for parenthood. I’m not sure how to educate children about the dangers of sex without making it seem like something worth trying. This will be something I have to tackle with my own children when the time comes. Whatever the solution is though, it needs to come fast. We have more than enough children raising children around here, and I for one am tired of seeing that turn into the next cool trend.

Things are really different here. I dont know anyone who’s sex education was just wait until you’re married. They told us everything pretty much and then they showed us pictures of what peoples genitals look like when they had a wide array of STI’s! And I went to a Catholic school! We dont do the fake baby thing. They just told us how much money it will cost to raise a baby and thats pretty off putting for a teenager. I suppose people push the abstinence thing because they dont want their kids to grow up too fast so they dont want to tell them how to be safe, they just want to tell them dont do it. Unfortunately for them, their kids have their hormones and the media telling them something completely different
