Why: Mein Schatz???

I want to know why the translators of the internet are all retarded, excuse my language please. I’m full deutsch, born and raised in Germany and I’d assume I know my own mother tongue better! Mein Schatz means My Sweetheart in English, but anywhere I go on the internet it says it means My Treasure which is wrong. How is this possible???

Machine translations are very ridiculous. You can’t translate with a machine and get good language. You can use machine translation to guess the contents of some text. But they will fail on sentence structure, colloqial expressions, sayings and figures of speech.

People do better, if they are really good in both languages. Professional people-translators translate from a learned tongue into their mother tongue. Not the other way.

There are often dozens of correct translations for a single word. Only a human can pick the one that fits the meaning of the original. And even for humans it’s hard to do.

Some words have meanings that cant be really translated. Take for example the german word ‘Angst’. Fear is ‘Furcht’. Panic is ‘Panik’. Angst is more intense than fear but less intense than panic. ‘Angst’ is often irrational and vague, while ‘Furcht’ is linked to a concrete threat. There is no way to express the true meaning of ‘Angst’ in english. That’s why people use the German word. A human can try to translate something like that by adding further description. A machine can’t translate it.

I know what you mean. I suppose the problem is that a lot of the translators do it word for word. Most things translated from German to English make no sense if they’re done that way. Phrases lose their meanings often, too. :( It’s kind of cruddy.

Answer #3

I have the same problem. Try translating something in Afrikaans. It comes out sounding really bad.
