Why is my turtle afraid of me?

When you walk up to the tank it runs to its cave. It wont let anyone touch it.should I take the cave out? Or play with them more often.

Answer #1

No! Turtles are pets to be observed. They do not like to be handled. Thats why he hides and swims away when you get close. Its a natural instinct for turtles to dodge for water when frightened as they are very fast swimmers. My turtle does the same..all turtles do..they dont like to be handled. Turtles dont get bored or lonely so he will be okk…

Ya, I would try playing with him more often. Always be very gentle, don’t flip him over or anything like that, stroke him gently and play with him, and he will start to trust you. Good luck :)

Answer #3

you should play with him more often. I used to have a turtle and he would do the same thing he is afraid because your so much bigger than him. you gotta stick you hand in the tank often but don’t come near him so he knows you mean him no harm. then after a while when you come 2 the cage he wont run. then you start to touch him and if he runs then leave him alone until he comes back out of hiding or else you’ll have 2 start all over again. then he will start to let you touch him more and more. then you will b able 2 pick him up and stuff.
