Why is it...Religion

Sorry Johnathan, it doesn’t work that way. If you want people to tell you you’re right, ask people to tell you you’re right. You’re asking for people’s opinions, and you’re going to get them whether you agree or disagree.

If an atheist made the comment ‘God isn’t real!’ to a believer, or a believer made the comment ‘God id real!’ to an atheist, you can expect the offended party to get cross- I mean, after all, if someone challenges your belief (or lack thereof), are you just going to sit there and take it? Chances are, you’re thinking ‘no way!’, and thus the argument brews. I think if people perfected the art of saying ‘this is my personal belief’, rather than provoking each other, we wouldn’t have anywhere near as many of these conflicts.

I find intolerance comes from both sides- atheist and religious. Atheists get annoyed that the religious cannot see the science contradicting the belief system, and the religious get annoyed at the atheists for trying to invalidate their faith. The best you can really do is set an example in yourself, and hope others will follow that example.

And the fact that you’ve resorted to insulting people, as opposed to trying to validate your opinion with substantial evidence, shows you clearly have no clue what you’re on about. You want people to tell you you’re right. We’re not going to do that. Be a grown up, build a bridge, and get over it.

if you want to have religous debates, I dont think Funadvice is the place to do it…because these arent FUN and I see no ADVICE in these.

We have a religion and spirituality section on the site for a reason- so people can discuss these matters. When things get out of hand, advisors and admins can lock questions/responses or delete them. Don’t like the way it’s done? No-one’s forcing you to stay here, you can leave anytime you want.

What if my god was a dollar bill? Would that warrant respect, or intolerance?

Or if my god was a snow demon that I dreamed about one day…and who showed me that in his icy coldness I could find enlightenment, peace and the “one true path to heaven”…

…what if I sat down with god, last week, and he told me we’re all mostly wrong, that he has many names, and that the only evil ones are those who belief their path is right?

Are all those belief systems worthy of respect, or would you be ‘fed up’ with all of those? What if my faith in science is as deep and abiding as that of people who believe in a book of religion, any book? Is that, also, worthy of respect & tolerance?

If none of us was there when any major religion, today, was created…or the book was written or the events occurred…and, in all these belief systems, God spoke to their chosen one (or they sat on a mountain, or in a desert, or spoke to an angel…) then why is it that these same faithful who found the courage to believe that once upon a time, a human being received enlightement straight from the divinity…

Answer: faith. The difference between being “fed up” with other belief systems and believing that we all have our own answer is only a difference in faith. I accept that you have your answer…will you, in turn, accept mine, even though it is different than any of yours?

I think that there are a number of reasons for the stigma surrounding religion. It could be because one person infatuated with their own beliefs, become offended when others do not. Sometimes one thinks that another will taunt them and thus lash out at others. Often times it is due to this that people will mock or try to convert others of a different belief. What we all must understand is that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs wither we disagree with them or not. Unfortunately as human beings, our attachment to uniformity leads us to confrontation when faced with individuals or groups who think or act differently then are selves this is instinct and thus not to be taken personally. If one disagrees with your beliefs and feels the need to taunt you don’t take this badly understand that this is simply their instincts and that they have their beliefs and you have yours. If your truly secure in your beliefs don’t bother arguing because you believing is enough. We all need to lean to keep an open mind and to just be able to rationally discuss our religions with out taking offense or feeling the need to disprove what others think. Sometimes it may just surprise you how much each religion has in common. Like the fact that we all appreciate and enjoy life.

its really depressing reading all the replies to this question. I think the main reason why people cannot really agree about religion is because no two people are exactly the same. every one thinks differently and has their own perspective about life and God. by being human, we are competitive. we are always going to quarrel and bicker at each other. if its not religion, its an argument about who is the best race or “chosen people”.

and im sorry, I have to say this: who are you to tell anyone that because they do not accept Jesus they will go to hell? or if I dont accept in the trinity, or what have you. by saying that, you are concluding that you can tell every ones fate- which makes God and yourself the all knowing. you contradict your own religion. I am only saying that because im so sick and tired of being told im going to burn in hell because I have a different opinion. if we dont agree as a people, we think of something called a compromise.

If someone believes differently than you they always feel like they are right and you are wrong. Where there are differences there will always be disagreements. I have run into a lot of people on here that like to tell me I am wrong and they always feel like they are standing for something by arguing endlessly. I guess it is just a real touchy subject. I never tell someone they are wrong until they tell me I am wrong.

If you don’t want answers to the question ‘does god exist’, then don’t ask the question. If what you want is for everyone to tell you you’re right, then post “Please tell me I’m right. Thanks!” instead.

Why is it that many people can’t tolerate other people’s religion?Why is it that when questions like ‘Does God exist?’ are asked, people will taunt you and your religion and these are people who don’t believe in God!I’m fed up of this thing!

I have absolutely no idea. this has happened to me, too and yes, it makes you feel horrible. I am strong in my faith and really want to be a witness, but with some questions im afraid to say some things that I belive for fear that I will be attacked by people who think it means so much to prove that god isn’t real. in other words, im pretty fed up too

I am feelin very SORRY for some people around here who would want to thrust their answers on you just because the majority does not agree with them!Bad Luck!Try someone else.

I have no problem with someone who believes in god. I am married to one. What I have a problem with is those believers who try to shove it down your throat, or who will interpret their gods will and actually claim that they know how he will deal with non-believers (by casting them into hell). As if it would be up to them. And I have a particular intolerance for those who are so blind and ignorant that they deny proven science simply because it interfere’s with their archaic belief system that all humanity started from two people created out of dust. Those people should be exposed every time they open their mouths.

I must agree with you Johnathan, although I am only 17 I fully inderstand where you are coming from, I strive to understand every aspect before making a descision but humanity is just so twisted, the majority of humanity don’t like to listen and understand and instead just like to have problems. It’s as though we are seeking conflict which makes me disgusted about being human and th think we consider ourselves better then animals hahaha who came up with that theory really. Well I must admit I am hardly the kindest person, infact I tend to laugh at other people’s problems but atleast I try to understand. Anyways enough of me ranting take care everyone ;)

actually its the other way around because its actually the majority of religious people, christians in particular that show NO respect towards other religions or athiests (people who dont beleive in god) like myself who is a proud athiest you dont see athiests on the street preaching and trying to convert people but people of other religions and athiests are almost always questioned or insaulted mostly by christians who tell them there going to hell, they should belive in god, why there god is great, ect and im NOT talking about ALL christians but a good majority of them do this they show no respect for people with different beleifs in them and without respect, they will get none in return

Johnathan you have mentioned being taunted for expressing your belief and I sympathize truly I do but have you ever considered that no matter which religion you follow you will be persecuted. In fact I as an atheist am constantly bothered by Christians and Catholics simply because I no longer follow what they say. I don’t go around disproving others religions yet they feel the need to inform me that I’m going to burn in hell. Atheists may say your wrong but we don’t say you’ll burn for it.

Satan is real - if allowed to enter in by a person, his influence will take control to do his purpose - that is to destroy man - Satan is aware of his fate and he wants to take as many with him as possible - each persons choice or reject - as Jesus said to His followers ‘they persecuted me, they will persecute you who speak in my name’ - it is my hope and prayer that whoever reads this if they haven’t already come to the saving knowledge of Jesus - not hard, as described in John 3 : 16.

Not sure how disagreeing with each other is being intolerant.

There are places where only believers are allowed. If you hang out there than you will be safe from non-believers. If you choose to participate in a discussion with so much diversity you shouldn’t expect everyone to agree.

I try to show as much respect for other people’s views as they show for mine. I am human though so sometimes I’ll say things I shouldn’t in the heat of a discussion but I try to respectful of even people I violently disagree with.

Look people, we cant tolerate eachothers religion because we are ALL closeminded. Athiests, Christians, Muslims WHATEVER YOU ARE, have their own story to believe, the key word there people is BELIEVE. If you believe that the sky is blue you arent going to sit there and argue or tolerate someone who tells you it is green because you think they are crazy and you dont understand why they would think such a thing. Now when I say we are all closeminded it means, yeah sure we are willing to hear eachother, but lets be honest, we arent willing to listen because we are all just reading one thing and thinking of something to say to counter that rather then actually reading it, yeah we all do it, now jazlovestoskate, im going to have to diagree with “its christians in particular that show NO respect towards other religions or athiests”.
