Why does my cat stink?

I have had my cat for almost 5 years now and around last year his breath started to stink like poop. I am not igsagerating, it litteraly stinks like poop! His breath still stinks like his poop but now the smell seems to be coming for him, everywhere! I am constantely checking to see if he has any “hangarounds” but he is very clean and I never find anything? Could he be ill? When it first started happening I checked his mouth right away thinking he may have a cavity, but nothing. Please help as we have not been petting him as much due to the stench.

Answer #1

It could be something as small as a gum abscess or as extreme as a ulcer. I would definitely take your cat to the vet A.S. A. P. Two of my cats had a similar problems and in one it turned out to be throat cancer and the other just had a cavity, so don’t take any chances. I hope this helps. Good Luck

Answer #2

Thanks for the advice, it is much appreciated. I will definitely have him checked out.

Answer #3

usually when cats clean their selfs they also lick their butt maybe thats the smell my cats lick their butt but I dont know about poop smelling breath lol

Answer #4

Would build up of anal glands make his breath stink? Also, my friend recently had her dog’s anal glands cleaned, do all dogs and cats supposed to have this performed, and how often?

Answer #5

The bad breath can be caused by a few things - tooth decay, poor digestion, even eating the feces out of the litter box…it’s definitely something worth mentioning to the vet.

Cats don’t generally need to have their glands released, but you do get the occasional cat that does need a little help with that.

Answer #6

He may have a buildup of fluid in his anal glands, which, when released, can end up staying on his coat and causing him to smell bad.

Take him to the vet for an examination.

Answer #7

Well, that bad of breath COULD mean he has something systemic going on inside…take him to the Vet for a thorough check up…

Answer #8

If the smell is mostly from the mouth then dental disease is most likely, have him checked out
