Why does my baby ferret snap at my hand?

My baby ferret snaps ( not nibbles) at me when I go to pick him up. When he does get me it hurts real bad. I am getting too scared to pick him up at all… What can I do? Please help me.

So, like cats and dogs, baby ferrets explore the world with their mouths as well as play using it too. As a baby, your kit doesn’t realise that it is biting way too hard. Your jpb is to make sure you get the point across how it is acceptable to play with humans.

Here is what you do. Firstly, if he/she snaps at your hand, scruff him/her for a good 20 seconds or so and give a firm “no!” Do not under any circumsantces hit or throw the kit wor you will prevent it from bonding with you at all.

Second, Encourage other behaviors such as licking by using ferretvite on your hands so that your fuzzbutt associates your hands with yummy stuff to lick.

Third, if you want to roughouse with your little carpetshark wear gloves so that he doesn’t associate his/her bitey play behavior with your skin and so that if he/she does bite, it won’t hurt you.

Best of luck.

Hey I Own A Ferret! Well He Is Probally Wanting To Play, Or Wants Attention Or He Might Feel Your Fear And React. I Know Your Getting Nervous To Pick Him Up But Remember Your The Boss, He Is Still A Baby. Tell Him NO In A Stern Voice. Don’t Stop Picking Him Up, You Need To Bond. Play With Him a lot And Give Him Treats, And Yall Should Become Great Pals Like Me and My Ferret. Good Luck ;)
