Why aren't gym memberships free?

I was watching a show on the discovery health channel and they said by 2017, 75% of our population will be obese. If obesity is such a crisis, with all the health issues why are gym memberships so expensive? I had a membership at Golds Gym and I paid $40 a month, and a personal trainer there cost an additional $45-60 per hour. Also, why is healthy food so expensive and foods that are extremely unhealthy so cheap??

Answer #1

Shall I do some math on why the government can not afford to do something like that?

Let’s Start!

A cheap gym membership is about 40$ a month, this goes for: new equipment, repairs to old, rent, gas, electric, water, cable, paying the workers, and advertisement. They really aren’t making a whole lot of money off your service. A good cheap gym cannot afford to lower their prices, they make money off of the products they sell.

How many people make up the United States? 298,000,000, according to a site I just read. $40 x 298,000,000 = 11,920,000,000

It would cost 12 BILLION Dollars to build this. To put that into perspective, that is roughly 6 Coal Burning Powerplants.

Also, this is technically a free country. Americans have the choice to eat at Mcdonalds twice a day, Americans have the choice to be Fat and Lazy.

Not saying its a good thing, but there are a lot more important things that they could do with 12 Billion Dollars.

I think you guys didnt understand my question? Im saying gyms should be free because its a health issue, I think it should be paid for by the government and gym memberships should be free. There free if your in the military, but everyone else that cant afford a gym membership are screwed!

Answer #3

good point about the food, doesn’y make any sense and it won’t change, oh well. But I has a gym membership for a month, 30 dollars a month. which aint to bad but I still quit. I would have stopped working out all together but my dad got a bowflex, so now I use that for free.

Answer #4

because all the stingy people in the world just want to make money, and also the money pays for the costs of running everything, I mean no one is going to open a gym and let people use it for free because it would be putting them out of pocket

Answer #5

All mentioned are in ‘Business’ - the goal of a business is to make a profit, that’s bottom line…Take care !!

Answer #6

I found a cheap way to keep fit - I gave up my expensive and not-much-used gym membership and now I go for a cycle ride every day. Just 30 mins ride gets me fitter and slimmer than the gym used to!

Vegetables aren’t expensive, are they? I agree that cheap processed food is unhealthy, though.

Answer #7

It’s called life sweetieheart. :)

Answer #8

We dont deserve things for free. We should work for what we get. The sense of entitlement shocks me.

Answer #9

Yeah, remember you pay for convenience.

Buying bulk whole grains, fruits and vegetables is not that expensive but you have to find time to prepare them.

Gyms are in business to make money. I belong to the YMCA (ironic me going someplace with Christian in its name eh?) which is quite a bit cheaper than health clubs.

Answer #10

oh ya and that dam bowflex cost over a grand

Answer #11

they charge you for gym membership because how else do you expect them to pay for all of the fitness equipment? it’s a business, they need profit to survive.
