Im confused about longboard. I've seen people with this longer skateboards in shape of a surfboard those ones you can buy at the mall, and I've seen on pictures regular surfboards with wheels...so which one of this is concidered longboarding a practical surfboard or just a longer skateboard?
its pretty much just a longer skateboard its what the people of dog town rode if the surf wasn't very good so they put roller blade wheels on pecies of wood and "surfed" the street. The skateboard is more compact for skating at parks and stuff like that.
longbaords are just for rolling and as a means of transportation, there too big to be able to do any tricks on, so all you can do is roll on them normal skateboards can be used for both transportation and doing tricks
ok a surf board with weels I have never seenbefor, but sounds fun... but a regular dryland long board is just a bigger skate board with bigger weels. a water longboard is a long surf board (not usually with weels)
long boards are for transportation(said above.) skateboards are for both transportation and doing several tricks, sorta more for a hobby or sport.

Long boards are more for transportation because they can go longer distances with one push but are heavier therefore skateboards are better for tricks
