from my knowledge, which may be incorrect, leave in conditioner sits in the hair providing for protection, and conditions it longer leaving the hair smoother and glossier than just rinsing out normal conditioner.
if your hair is dry or damaged, to leave the conditioner in hair helps to strenghten and moisturize hair.
