What surname would my neice take if she married her girlfriend?

This is weird question my neice asked me.

She is madly in love with this girl and she feels the same way about her. They really want to meet but they do chat on the phone and online and stuff and always talking about each other. She told me she loves her girlfriend and wants to spend her life with her and live together and want’s to marry her when they are old enough and told me her girlfriend feels the same way and said yes to her. They are both 13 and it’s not just a kid thing but really is true love and I can tell that. The question she asked me is if she got married to her what surname would she have as girls change there name. Would they both keep there names of what? Would she change to her girlfriend name or visa virta? It’s confussed me now so please can someone help.

Hm.. well, first of all… 13 is too young to tell. There is a good chance, even if she is confident that she is a lesbian, that they will part at one point and look for closer matches. I do believe in finding soul mates, so maybe she is just that fortunate.. but in my experience it is extremely rare.

As for your question, legal issues aside(if there are any), I think that is a matter of discussion between the two. My best friend, a full fledged lesbian(unfortunately for me, considering that I practically see her as the soul-mate of my life..) was married twice. The first marriage, I am not exactly familiar with.. but it was a bit of a hasty decision on her part. The second(also hasty and failed), I know she took her partner’s name. I have never directly asked, but I am very close to this girl.. and I know how she ticks, she is the follower type. At one point, they are likely to pick the name of the more aggressive individual… or possibly flip a coin or go with whatever sounds better. shrug It really depends on the couple.

Ok thanks for that and yes know they are young but I also know this is not a thing that will pass in the night and they really are mad and taking this very very real too and know they are meant for each other and they really want to be together.

I’m sure when her girlfriend reads this she is agree with this and comment on it.

This is also going to depend on where they get married at. Some places will not do a real marriage - they will do a civil union. In that case - their names do not change - but they can go to the courthouse and request a name change to whatever their partners name is.

My mom was divorced a few years ago and I found out that when a woman is married or divorced, they can get a name change for free. Otherwise you can just get one any time you like if you pay some money. So it would be totally up to them, but I am not sure if at 13 I would actually know if I wanted to get married. I know at 14 I wouldn’t want to get married or promise to.

If I was married to a guy or girl, I would want to keep my name as it currently is…but that is just my personal choice.
