What should I do..trust him...or not?

I had been talkin to this guy for awhile and we were really close and we texted ALL the time… but then around a month and a half ago he txtd me saying he had a girlfriend and to never txt him again and then me and him got into a fight because I had trusted him…so I hadnt talked to him since then.. but then 2 nights ago while I was hanging with my friends he txtd me out of the blue saying that he hadnt sent those txts at all and it had all been his friend trying to mess with him and his “chances” and that he was really sorry and the only reason he hadnt txtd me at all was because of the way I reacted…I dont know wether I should beleive him or not…I really want to because he makes me SO happy…but friends of mine who are in his school (he goes to a diff. town) told me he had been walking around holding some girls hand and that they had looked like a “thing”… I really need some advice on what to do :/
