What’s the correct term for someone who is in prison? Prisoner, convict, inmate, or jailbird?

It depends.

A Prisoner is one who is deemed confinement in a controlled environment.

A Convict is basically someone convicted of a crime.

An Inmate is the term used describing a person who is on the inside, for exp:

“Two Inmates went to the weight room and pumped some Iron.”

And Jailbird, is someone who tries to, or successes in an escape.
