Anywhere you hit the bone it will hurt, a lot. Muscular areas are next. Followed by fat.

I got my first one on my back between my shoulder blades. It was irritating, but I wouldnt say it was painful.

Second is on my wrist. If you have a low pain tolerence I wouldnt suggest this. It hurt. Still not unbearable, but it did NOT feel good.

Third is one on my shoulder and continuing down my arm. This one was another causing minimal pain. It did graze my collar bone which hurt but the rest wasnt bad.

Fourth, I have one on my leg right next to my knee cap. It didnt hurt until it hit the bone, then it hurt a lot.

Fifth is on my forarm right below the bend from my elbow. It was uncomfortable and irritating but it wasnt really painful.

I would NOT suggest your foot, hand, ribs, stomach, wrist, or neck for your first tattoo if you know you have a low pain tolerance or if your nervous. I WOULD suggest your arm, upper back, or shoulder.

It really depends on you though. Find an artist that is patient and let him/her know you are nervous. Once you are in the chair you can ask to take a break if you need to. Take a friend along that you know you have good conversations with, it will help to keep you distracted. Dont drink alcohol the night before or the day of because your blood will be thinner making it harder to tattoo you and causing a longer time in the chair.

Good luck and cheers!

For my first tattoo, I got a tramp stamp (lower back tattoo), and it hurt a lot to me. I, like you, don’t do well with pain. I apparently like to chew on my arm when I have a needle carving an image into my skin, or so I found out. I literally chewed on my arm for the full hour it took to do my tattoo, and I cried half way through it. It was the weirdest thing. In the end, I was absolutely thrilled, but man it was a struggle to get there.

During my tat, I kept thinking ‘’Heaven, really…why the hell are you doing this?’’ because it hurt so bad, but I really wouldn’t trade it for anything now. It’s one of those sacrifices that you willingly make because you want something so badly.

For one, start small. My first was fairly large considering that I had never had one, and it was in full color. You might want to go with something small that requires little shading or color in it. The shading, in my opinion, hurts more than anything else.

As for location, I’ve heard (not confirmed) that behind the neck doesn’t hurt much, nor does the front area right around your pant line. Foot, lower back, and wrist are all seemingly the worst. Oh, the shoulder supposedly doesn’t hurt much either, and I wouldn’t guess the upper arm would. That all depends on your arm though.

Best thing to do would be to print off whatever you want the tattoo to be and take it to a shop. They’re always cool there, and they can give you a price quote and let you know where you might want to get it. I love my tattoo shop guys. Get a good relationship going with them and you’ll have a much better experience.

Whew, I wrote a novel, but all in all, good luck :)

All tattoos are going to hurt. There really isn’t a way to get something permanently inked onto your body using needles that doesn’t hurt. Some areas may be more painful, but that seems to vary from person to person and their particular experience. I have one tattoo that runs down my foot and around my ankle. It hurt, but nothing I couldn’t handle. With my tattoo, they started on my foot and worked their way towards my ankle outlining in black. The closer the got to my ankle, the more it hurt. Does that mean that the ankle is more painful than the foot, or does it just mean that by the time they got to my ankle the pain was starting to get to me more? Then they went back through and colored in the outlined design and by the third pass with some shading and extra color, I’d had enough and I was glad it was over! But, your endorphins kick in and you have this great exhilarating feeling and sense of accomplishment afterwards. I’m getting my second one across the top of my back next week or the week after and I can’t wait. If tattoos were really that bad, do you think everyone that has one would go back for more? You’ll be fine. Get exactly what you want, exactly where you want it. A small ‘starter’ tattoo you don’t feel passionately about somewhere said to be the least painful doesn’t make much sense to me. My opinion is, go hard or go home. :) Oh, and I also don’t recommend stopping during the tattoo for a break. It makes going back under the needle that much harder. Good luck, tattoos are a little addicting!

I have a tattoo on my ankle and it only hurt a little at first… after that it went numb. I think my bodies natural pain killer kicked in or something. But yeah just try to not focus on it and put your mind somewhere else it’ll be fine. It was pretty sore afterwards but not too bad, just put the stuff on they give you and it won’t hurt so bad.

Hey, On bone it Really Hurts, Probably the worse. It doesnt hurt that bad any where else, I’m 14, I like pain, You may be different. Get it where there is flesh, Like the stomach, Arm, Not the bottom of the stomach, its kinda hurts on the hip bones. Your back would be fine too. Hope I helped.! :) Either way, Their Will Be Slight pain.

Try taking some advil before you go, thats what I do before I get my eyebrows done, lol.

If you have an ipod you can listen to some calming music while its being down, if the person lets you.
