What is Xanax used for?

So my mother takes these pills called Xanax to go to sleep. She claims sometime after I born she could not sleep and she went to her doctor and they prescribed her Xanax . Now I’m not really sure at all what these are or what their used for I would like to know though because unfortunately I’ve learned my mother doesn’t always tell the truth so I’d if someone here could tell me what they are and what they are used for that would be nice. Oh and she claims that when she doesn’t have her Xanax or goes without them for a period of time she has Seizures or Mild strokes (which I didn’t know strokes could be mild) are these side effects of xanax? Or could that be related to something else? All answers are greatly appreciated.

Answer #1

Xanax is a pill that is used to treat mainly anxiety and panic disorders. As far as I know the seizures and mild strokes (yes strokes can be mild) are not side effects of xanax.

In any case, read more about it here. http://www.drugs.com/xanax.html

Answer #2

Anxiety and panic disorders you say. Hmm is it possible to use those as a sleep aid or something to that sort? Because as far as I know she uses those to sleep. I do find it a little odd that she takes Xanax rather than Ambien or something like that to sleep..

Answer #3

It does make sense that it helps her sleep, because if you are anxious it is very hard to fall asleep. So maybe it is solving to problems at the same time.

Answer #4

I see. Yes that does make a lot of sense thank you for your input. I still wonder what could be causing her the seizures though. Perhaps she isn’t really having them because like you said Strokes and seizures aren’t side effects of them and I didn’t see anything about strokes or seizures mentioned on that page you linked me either. Well either way thank you for your assistance it was appreciated =).

Answer #5

Yes, it is possible to use it to relax and thus sleep. But if she’s addicted (which would explain the withdrawal, it’s not a side effect, it’s withdrawal, which may include some unpleasant symptoms) that is a little problematic. You need to talk to a dr

Answer #6

Yes of course withdrawal symptoms! It makes sense now. Sometimes she has to go 2 or 3 weeks without her xanax because she doesn’t always have money for it causing her seizures and strokes. Perhaps I should have her see a doctor about this before something worse happens..
