What is the purpose of the Appendix?

Probably spelt it wrong but you get the idea. I mean what exactly does it do? Except for cause like loads of deaths worldwide! Its a silly organ!

I would have died at 5 years of age if it weren’t for an appendectomy. There are a number of theories about the purpose of the appendix.

One is that it is a vestegial organ. It may at one time served to help digest foods that we haven’t eaten for a long time (perhaps leaves or grass).

Another theory is that it serves some immune system function. Of course people (like myself) who have had their appendix removed do not seem to have any health problems without it goes agains this theory.

Another theory is the appendix serves as a safe place for beneficial intestinal flora to survive when we are ill.
