What is the difference between a .45 gun and a 9mm?

I want to learn more about firearms and I’m not too clever about them.

big_ol_68, 45mm across? I’d like to see the pistol that could chamber that! Older rounds like the .45 the caliber refers to hundredths of an inch. A 45mm bullet would be almost 2 inches in diameter! The .45 is a little less than half an inch.

45 is a big slow bullet, 9mm is a small fast one. A lot of people argue that the larger slower bullet transfers more of its energy to its target so it causes more trauma while others argue that an auto can hold more 9mm rounds and 9mm’s higher velocity allow greater expansion causing more trauma. The slower .45 has less penetration so it is less likely to over-penetrate and hit bystanders but it is also less likely to pass through obstacles between the shooter and adversary (e.g. car windows, body armor).

Gun enthusiasts argue a great deal about what round is the better choice for particular purposes. Arguments about .45 vs 9mm often get as heated as Ford vs. Chevy, Nikon vs. Canon, Mac vs. PC, etc. NATO has standardized on 9mm and most of our military has switched to 9mm as well.

Answer #2

a 45 is designed to take down your target… it is made to make sure you shoot them once and they wont be coming back up its a heavier round too… a 9 however is a far lighter round not able to penetrate as well what a 9 does it goes in and thats really it it doesnt take much with it the 45 is gonna hurt your target the 9 will just phase depending on where you shoot them

Answer #3

The difference in the gun is the size of the round.

the 9mm and .45 have different weight and diameters.

The 9mm is .356” vs. the .45 at .452”

Answer #4

But… you can have a 9 the same size as a 45. It’s the barrel which would mean the bullet, that makes a difference. I have a 22 that is small enough to fit into my purse. My purse is not one of those large handbags that are in right now. But my cousin has a 22 that puts me in the mind of Yositeme Sam’s gun from Looney Tunes. Helpful?

Answer #5

That’s what google is for.

Answer #6

Its the diameter of the bullet. 9mm across. Vs 45 mm across.

Answer #7

One bullet is bigger than the other.

Answer #8

A 45 is bigger, and does more damage. 9MM is standard cop issue.
