What is a second cousin?

If I had a second cousin, what would they be in relation to me? I’ve heard this expression a bit in the last couple of days and I’m not sure. Britz

HAHA. I was correct. So, I have a second cousin. Even though I still don’t get it.

Answer #2

Its your mother or father’s cousin’s child. example:

Lisa&Frank - cousins - Katie&Josh(parents) John -John and I are 2nd cousins- Me

Get it?

Answer #3

your second cousin could be your cousins child or your mothers or fathers {or aunts and uncles(I think)} cousin

Answer #4

Say your cousin had a child - that child is now your second cousin. Your regular cousin is also known as your first cousin, most people just say “cousin” though.

Answer #5

Actually its kind of complicated.

Your cousin’s child is your first cousin once removed. Your mother’s cousin is also your first cousin once removed.

The “once removed” indicates a generation away from you, either up or down.

Your second cousin is in your generation, and shares the same great grand parents as you, instead of sharing grandparents. Example, your mother’s cousin’s children are your second cousins.

Every time I get the hang of this, I understand and remember it for about a week. If I wait 3 years, I have to look it up again. I did some genealogy on my dad’s side, so I have it written on the inside of the folder now. With pictures, LOL, Whew.

So think of it this way..

— Up or down a generation = removed. — Same generation, 1st shares grandparents, second shares great grandparents, third shares g-g-grands.
