What is a half times a half?

saying times is like saying “of”. as in 1/2 times 1 is 1/2 of 1, which is 1/2 so 1/2 times 1/2 is the same as 1/2 of 1/2, which is 1/4

take a cake and cut it in half. Take half of the half, and you have a quarter of the original cake.

half=.5 So, .5 x .5= .25 .25=a quarter, or 1/4

But none of them explained the how of it to her.

When you say 1/2 times 1/2 you multiply the top part of the fractions (in this case 1 x 1) and multiply the bottom part of the fractions (in this case 2 x 2). You then put the top result (1 x 1 = 1) over the bottom result (2 x 2 = 4) getting the answer of 1/4.
