What does the Bible say about premarital sex?

Me and my girlfriends are Christians, and we go to church, but we don’t understand what the Bible’s stance on pre-marital sex is.

I have several friends at college who are Christians but have had pre-marital sex with their girlfriends.

Can someone enlighten me on this

Brinkus – please read the following which I’ve copied from another site:

“The legal age to marry was 12.5 yr for girls and 13.5 for boys. Younger children often were “betrothed” - families had contracted with each other for their marriage, but they were not old enough for the marriage to be consummated. There was no teen age sex problem since all were married and men could have all the sexual variety they wanted dependent only on how many wives they could afford.

Singles sexuality was not discussed since most women were married or betrothed. A man negotiated with the father and if a financial deal was struck, he took the girl as his wife. Mutual love had nothing to do with it. If the man also liked the girls pretty sister, he may negotiate to take her as another wife. For men, there was little reason for sex with a single girl, since he could have all the wives as sexual partners as he desired - as long as he didn’t steal another mans property (adultery).

All Christians, men or women, belonged to Christ, and all other forms of ownership must be made to accommodate this. The family was highly regarded as a social unit for retaining the family heritage (mans side). Sex almost certainly produced children with no birth control.”

So if the bible say, no premarital sex, I can understand that the people who wrote the bible almost 2000 years ago, wouldn’t want girls/boys to have premarital sex, because that would have meant having sex at the age of 10-12 :-o which in your case is much different and I would say the most important issue is to be responsible at all times!

I am a Christian too. I read the NIV version of the Bible, it actually has cliff notes, which helps me. You can read the passages too, I am sure that they will help you. The answers are in Genesis, Hebrews, Corinthians, and Song of Songs. Genesis shows how marriage is a union, becoming, “one flesh.” Hebrews speaks about faithfullness and fidelity. Corinthians speaks about love, and how to express love. Song of Songs shows how the union of a man and a woman is first with God, then with spouse, which makes it so beautiful because in a healthy relationship it really is a mind, body and spirit connection. God is forgiving. He understands that we have those desires within us, he put them there. People who have strong sexual desires should get married if they want to have sex. People who are too young to get married, but have the desire should see it as kind of like a preparation for getting married. They could start preparing ahead . They need to be asking themselves these questions: What kind of person would I like to marry? Is this person nice to me? Is this person of the same faith as me? Does this person’s extended family accept me for who I am? Does this person respect me? Am I ready to make a commitment to this person? If we make babies, how are we going to provide for them? Where will we live? What other things do myself and this other person have in common besides the desire to get under the sheets? In other words, do I feel connected with this person in mind and spirit as well as body? Your body is a temple, not a tool. My answer to you is: You should wait until you get married until you have sex.

all these people are saying that the bible was written by men and it’s adapted through time, all I can say is this, if you don’t believe something in the bible, don’t believe anything. The bible isn’t a buffett. don’t pick and choose things you want to believe. and if you don’t believe the scripture

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

—Galatians 5:16-21

then don’t believe john 3:16

beleive everything or nothing.. the bible is true.

Answer #4

No, there isn’t anywhere in the Bible that has a sentence which stipulates “thou shalt not have sex before marriage” but there are many verses in the Scripture which hints a person should not have pre-marital sex but to reserve sex for within a marriage.

I’m a modern day Christian, proud of my Heavenly Father and believe in the Bible, but also am aware the Bible does not contain modern day relationships, which is problematic for Christians like you and me.

God designed sex and based on His Bible sex is good, sex is wonderful between two loving consenting adults in a long faithful committed relationship… So based on that my interpretation would be, you are with someone and have been with the person for a lengthy period of time and your relationship with the person is not a casual sex fling (that is, you are not in a one night stand or just a casual opened non-committed relationship), then I personally believe you are joining as one body minus the marriage part and pre-martial sex as a Christian would be forgiven by our very forgiving God. :)

Plus, God created sex, and let adam and eve have it inside of covonent. If God created it for that, it’s not for us to decide how it should be used.

Where in the Bible does it say that Adam & Eve were married before they started having sex?

all these people are saying that the bible was written by men and it’s adapted through time, all I can say is this, if you don’t believe something in the bible, don’t believe anything. The bible isn’t a buffett. don’t pick and choose things you want to believe.

I assure you, there are things in the Bible that you DON’T and WON’T believe.

Answer #12

Fornication is sex outside of marriage. Yes fornication is sex outside marriage.

No it isn’t… when the Bible was written, the Hebrew, Greek, & Lating word for [fornicate, fornication] meant ‘to have sex with a prostitute’ …PERIOD…

We’ve already been over this a dozen times…dictionaries aren’t retroactive… you can’t apply the modern English definition of a word, when the Bible wasn’t WRITTEN in English to begin with.

Answer #13

Yes fornication is sex outside marriage. Soif you want to know the Bibles view on premarital sex look for what it sys about fornication.

Fornication is sinful and we must refrain from it.

and remember that the bible is constantly being changed and people are constantly adding new things to it

No the Bible is not constantly change and no additions have been made to it.

Answer #14

I forget the book and chapter but,… Fornication is sex outside of marriage. There is a verse that says something meaning “forgo fornication” meaning no sex before marriage.

One of you guys (fruitylicious?) maybe know which verse I’m talking about!? Lol. Went to church all the time as a kid but memory fails me at times. Also, the Bible is not open to interpretation. It says what it means, otherwise why write it if you can interpret it any way you wish.

Answer #15

heres what I think I love God with all my heart but He doesnt expect you to be perfect yes Hes against haveing sex before marraige but Hes not gna hate you for it your human.. Hes God its not the other way around I think if you and her are ready well… do it.

Answer #16

God’s forgiveness is not fire insurance. You don’t sin, knowing God will stil love you. God isn’t mean, and it’s npt that He doesn’t want you to have fun. But when yiu have sex, you become one flesh, and God wants to protect you from this. When you get married, you’ll have soul ties and all that kinda stuff, and it can damage your relationship. Plus, God created sex, and let adam and eve have it inside of covonent. If God created it for that, it’s not for us to decide how it should be used.

Answer #17

Even though I am spiritual and believe in GOD. Do what you believe is comfortable for you and your girlfriend. The bible is to teach us about our lord and his teachings. The bible was NOT made to rule your life. It does not matter If is a sin or not, GOD will love you regardless. Don’t hesitate for a moment in your life because you think something is “sinful”. Just think it through with your girlfriend and give her the opportunity to give her opinion to the subject. Make your choice based with how you guys are comfortable with it. And remember If anything happens practice safe-sex and live healthy lifes. God bless

Answer #18

Finally a Christian with common sense. YEAH!!! cheers

good answer fruitylicious.

Answer #19

sigh

I didn’t say that… kassie did… and NOBODY follows the whole Bible.

Answer #20

Or else what would differentiate you from animals?

Looks like someone skipped science class

Human’s are MAMMALS. I.e. animals.

And just like ALL the other species differ from each other in regards with certain behaviour and ability, we differ in behaviour and ability from them.
