Why not rather use the birth control pill. The depo shot has a LOT of side effects.
Some of them are:
70% of women using Depo Provera gain weight. Almost half of the women using Depo Provera gain more than 5 pounds after one year of use. Many women gain more than 10 pounds.
Irregular, heavy, or no bleeding are common side effects of Depo Provera. After a year of use, many women stop having periods. Lack of a period becomes increasingly common with longer use.
Other side effects of Depo Provera can include headaches, nervousness, mood changes, bloating, hot flashes, decreased interest in sex, breast tenderness, acne, hair loss, and back ache.
After the last shot of Depo Provera, it can take over 6 months for the drug to leave the body. Side effects may linger until the drug is completely gone.
It also causes loss of bone density and risk of osteoporosis.
It can delay the return of your fertility.

Why not rather try the birth control pill. That will also regulate your period and help for period pains.
As for when it becomes effective: It becomes effective after about a day after the injection (some nurses recommend that you wait about 4 days - so ask the person administering it to you.
I got my first depo when I was on my menstual cycle and it stopped it the very next day and I had 6 days to go. It works great and is so easy and reliable. Only bad side effect I have found is that I have depression, and I would be depressed and have really bad down times about once every few weeks when I wasnt on the depo, but then when I went on the depo it made my depression more severe, to the point that I OVD because I was so depressed. My doctor never warned me about the effects of it making depression more severe, and some people who have never had any symptoms of it, can get it from the depo.
I am new to depo and I have only gotten one shot. Im due for my next shot in a couple days. There is no bad side affects to depo really. Some people gain a little weight. Thats what happened to me. Also I was spotting for a long time, around 19 days, but they say that that might happen when you get your first shot because your body is getting used to it. After that I have not gotten any perods and the spotting has stopped.
I really liked the depo when I was young. I was really bad about taking my pill so it is really good on that part. I really can't say anything bad about it. It will stop your menstrual cycle, my mom did not like that but it was great for me. My friend had depo for three years and when she stop using it, it took a year to get her cycle back and she got pregnant after her first cycle so I know it works good.
here is no bad side affects to depo really.
Yes there are and can be. It depends on the person and it DOES cause loss of bone density. You should really read up about it.
