GUIs are so common these days, you use them all the time without really realizing it! Windows, Mac OS X, even a regular ol’ cell phone interface are all examples of a graphical user interface.

The distinction came about because computers used to have a command line interface (CLI). If you have Windows, you may be seen the DOS prompt before (if not, go to your Start menu, click on run, then type in “cmd” and hit Return. The black window with white text that pops up is a command line interface.)

As computers became more powerful, people started creating new ways of interacting with them using a mouse. These were new and different at the time, so were given a different name: the graphical user interface. Now, the GUI is so pervasive in technology that nearly every device has one, and many people today don’t know that there was ever anything else.

For a great history of all of this, take a look at the book called, “In The Beginning Was The Command Line” by Neal Stephenson. It talks about the history of command line interfaces, as well as the rise and later dominance of graphical user interfaces.
