What's with this weird stereotype that African Americans drink grape soda and eat fried chicken?

Answer #1

Well i suppose its there because often it is true if i am being completely honest, i mean white people and Asian’s also enjoy them but i guess people just notice it when African Americans do.

Answer #2

Idk but i’m white and love both.

Answer #3

fried chicken did originate with the slaves that were in the south- it was an easy meal to take to the fields and convenient and cheap.

i am white and i do like KFC and the other major fast food chicken places.

Well, lots of stereotypes aren’t as true as they seem, rather a result of people using a few as standard for an entire group. The power of suggestion is quite strong. Everyday conversation, gossip, jokes, ect ect is a good catylist for almost anything becoming a routine way of thinking.

Answer #5

Well to begin with, all stereotypes have more than a pinch of truth in them. I bet it was just in a few movies then grew from there.

Answer #6

haha its just a rasist stereotype i mean ya some of them like that stuff but not all just like any other food

Answer #7

Just another weird stereotype. I guess that just as many other Americans like that sort of food. And there will be a number of African Americans who don’t like it.

You know it works like this… Get an idea, anything absurd like… “Fat women prefer brown shoes”. And then go to a mall. Or anywhere else where there are many people. And look out for fat women with brown shoes. You will see fat women wearing brown shoes. Of course a few fat women there will wear black shoes or brightly colored shoes but … you’ll get the impression that they are a minority if you just shrug, think that they are the exception and look out for more fat women with black shoes. There’s another! And Never count how many other people wear brown shoes… In the end of the day, you will be convinced that fat women really do prefer brown shoes. Then you tell your friends and they get the same impression. There’s another “juggernaut fairy”. She has brown shoes! See, I told you!

A clean, clear statistic would of course reveal that the percentage of fat women who wear brown shoes is not higher than the percentage of other people wearing brown shoes. But still, you walk on the street and see another bumble-bee-lady with brown shoes. And next to her, her slender friend with a pair of red sandals. Statistics must be lying.

Answer #8

Grape soda? What about Big Red? That’s the stereotype around here anyway. FWIW I’m Caucasian and I think that Stewart’s Grape soda is the best soda on the planet. While it is a stereotype I did notice when I worked as a cook that fried chicken was particularly popular with African Americans. It isn’t entirely off base to notice that certain ethnic groups have certain dietary preferences.
