What are similar graphic novels to watchmen by Alan Moore?

okay so I read alan moore’s watchmen a while ago and I loved it. I’ve never been into comic books and I’m just wondering if anyone has suggestions of comics sort of similar that I can get..because I’m pretty clueless in this category :) thanks

Watchmen was my first venture into graphic novels as well, but I hated it. Still do. I might have to read it again since I seem to be the only one, though, Maybe I missed something…

I strongly recommend giving Preacher a look next. It’s not quite as heavy-duty as Watchmen in terms of grand, overarching philosophical themes, but it’s still nicely compelling.

I just read Marvels for the first time recently and found it interesting enough to recommend. It’s about what it would be like to live in a world where superheroes in the Marvel universe are constantly turning everything upside down while they battle each other. It’s got some of the most amazing artwork you’ll ever see in a graphic novel, and more about the human element than the superhuman element, but it might not be a good match if you have no interest in the “muscle man in spandex” side of the comics world.

Blankets was such a good book, it caused me to write the only fan letter I’ve ever sent. It has nothing to do with superheroes at all, just two kids falling in love, but if it doesn’t leave you breathless, you have no soul. why the Last Man is really intense, and very long, so it’ll keep you very busy if you get into it. It’s about a world in which every man has vanished except for one guy. And his pet monkey.

Lucifer (guess what that one’s about) is a really great story, but may be a little too esoteric for a GN newbie. Save the title in the back of your head for later, though.

Also in the the “slice of life” genre is Local, kind of a vignette of short-story comics that follows a girl as she bounces from place to place in the US. It’s a very gentle read, but great artwork and an extremely likable protagonist.

Pride of Baghdad gets a lot of press, and it’s very pretty to look at, but it’s also a very short book. I would advise taking that to a corner of the bookstore and reading it.

Finally, We3 is a personal favorite, since I’m both a sci-fi fan and an animal lover. Google it. You’ll see what I mean.
