Virus treatment in the us

I was watching some american thing on tv a while ago and they were talking about an antibiotic resistant strain of bacteria. They had this case study and in it this girl was suspected to have a viral infection so the doctor prescribed her anti-biotics. All I could think at this point was no wonder bacteria is becoming resistant to antibiotic treatment considering virus’ cant be treated with antibiotics. So… Is this normal? To be prescribed anti-biotics for a viral infection in the us?

Answer #1

good to know, it was a worrying thought!

Answer #2

No, it is actually not. most times if you are diganosed with any type of viral infection, or virus period, the only thing the doctor will prescribe will be pain meds, and immune boosters. but anti-biotics are never, or at least very rarely prescribed for viral infections in the United States.
